Here’s a story of victory. My cousin fought in Afganistán in the early 2000s and while deployed discovered he had Leukemia. They tried nearly everything they knew at the time to keep him alive but deep down my family thought we were going to lose him. Nothing would’ve been the same without him. While fighting for his country and the cancer he discovered a group of doctors doing experimental treatments in Texas. They took out his bone marrow, irradiated it, and put it back in. His strong will and faith in God is what he believes allowed him to survive. If you or a loved one is fighting, I hope this gives you hope.

Half way through 2018 my grandpa was diagnosed with cancer and everything he hurt or couldn't breath he went to the emergency room and they took x-rays and cat scans and still told him it was just bronchitis. I tried to spend as much time as I could with him along with bringing my daughter around who was 1 at the time to see him. Around April or May of last year he ended up in the hospital and I left my friend's wedding reception to go up and see him for the night and took my daughter along so he could see atleast one of his grandkids and he got see her walk and climb on furniture by herself and it lit up his world. That was the last night we saw him because he ended up doing the treatments, he came home one weekend about the last week of May and he was sick and my daughter had a cold, I wanted to take her over there but I didn't want to risk it and Sunday night the ambulance took him to the hospital and he died Monday morning on memorial day. I was devastated he was an awesome person to have around and who could fix anything and had patience to teach anyone about anything that had a motor.

I was 17 years old when I was, both, diagnosed and "cured". November 1990: I went to the doctor for a routine check up. He did his thing, felt around on my neck and developed a little bit of puzzled, yet not overly worried, look on his face. He said that he felt what seemed to be some small lumps on my thyroid. Then he said, "It's probably nothing but we should get it checked any how." So, they scheduled a me for an ultrasound on my neck. A few days later: I had the ultrasound completed. I can remember the technician and doctor looking around and then I hear, "WOW...right there. It is amazing that Dr.Huff was able to feel these by hand. They are very tiny. We can't tell anything about them by scanning, we recommend having the surgery to be on the safe side." Met with a surgeon within a week. He looked over the scans and did a general assessment. He agreed with the removal. December 5th @ 5:45 a.m.: I entered the hospital for my surgery. They allotted 3 hours. I was told that they would go in and remove the left side of my thyroid and ten perform a frozen pathology report on it (I think I remember that correctly). Then they said, "If we find it to be malignant" (cancerous) "We will have to remove 90% of the right side as a precaution. Then, you will have to undergo some radiation treatments to kill off the remaining 90% of the right side." My surgery took 5 1/2 hours. I woke up several times in my room that afternoon. The first cognitive time of me being awake was when I heard my father talking to a preacher that had stopped by. I heard him say, "It was cancerous but they think they have removed it all." That's when my mom shushed my dad and indicated that I was awake. I went right back out, but that is how I found out that I had cancer. 2 hours later, I was fully awake...groggy but awake...I had to pee. I walked to the bathroom, with assistance, shut the door and looked in the mirror.....I was not prepared for what I saw. I had a clear tube coming out of each side of my neck. Each tube had some clear fluid and some blood in it. These tubes came down to my chest and made a wrapped circle. I later found out that these were just drain tubes. My neck was heavily bandaged with gauze and tape. My throat was sore and it hurt to swallow. Nobody said anything else to me about the surgery until later that next evening. I broke down crying and told my parents that I heard what my dad had said to the preacher. Then I asked them, "Am I gonna die?" I was explained everything then. They called the doctor back in and had him go over everything with me. The doctor, my cousin (a nurse) and several other medical officials (I can't remember who all they were..doctors, nurses, etc.) all said the same thing, "If you had to choose a place to have cancer, the thyroid is where you would want to choose." I was also explained about how they did find the tumors on the left side to be cancerous and that they had to remove the 90% of the right side as well. I later found out that there was cancer on that side as well. December 7th, 1990 (2 days after my surgery AND my 18th birthday): I was allowed to go home....my first "large dose" radiation treatment was scheduled for a few months later. I can still remember the feeling of those drain tubes being pulled out. This was definitely NOT the way I intended to spend my 18th birthday. But I was able to go home and live. I was lucky. I did not even know, for sure, that I had cancer until after it had been removed. I still had a lot of the follow up stuff - like the radiation treatments (NOT chemotherapy) - but I was, for the most part, healthy. Unfortunately, when my Marines recruiter got wind of my prognosis and was informed that I am required to take a small pill everyday for the rest of my life, he informed me, regretfully, that I was no longer eligible to be a Marine because I was medicinally dependent and, if deployed to combat, they could not guarantee that I would have my medication available. I then would become a liability. I was heartbroken. This December will mark my 30th year anniversary from my surgery. I still take my medication every day and I can still remember nearly every detail of my diagnosis and progression. The high points and the lowest points (depression). So, THANK YOU Tom...even though I was lucky, it was still life altering. I just can't explain the feeling and overwhelming emotions you have when someone associated you with cancer for the first time. It was scary and confusing. This song, and video, really captured the emotional aspect of it all. Forever a fan!!

I watched my mom pass before my very eyes almost 1 year exactly the day she was diagnosed. I didn't know who she was in the end. It so cruel. This life is just so cruel. Cancer runs in my family & I am almost certain of my fate as well. But until then, I don't think about it. There isn't anything I can do about it. If it is Gods will, then so be it I suppose.

Makes me miss my grandma. I was the last person in my family to see her awake and lively. We all stayed at my grandparents for a week when I was really little (maybe 7?). I just remember waking up on the couch in the middle of the night because I heard something. I saw her come out of the bathroom to go lay back down. I remember my parents saying she couldn't leave her bed and didn't have to go to the bathroom because she had a bag so I was really confused why she was moving around. She had the biggest grin on her face that I've ever seen. She kissed my forehead, told me she loved me, and I went back to sleep. When I woke up in the morning, she was already gone. I was the last to say goodbye. My sister also just beat cancer about 2 years ago. It's very prevalent in the women in my family. This song really hit home for me. I've never had any song in my life move me to tears. Great work, Tom. I'm glad you're making it big.

Between radiation and chemotherapy give us a million and we can promise that you will survive. Oh I’m sorry your low income the best we can do is give 3 months to live. Honestly how can a doctor give you expiration date, that’s a death sentence because you wanna give up at that point. This is America we rather make you pay for death instead of fixing the problem.

Dammit, man...you really need a tear warning at the start of this. And then the personal stories in the comments...I just wasn't ready for the emotion. I hope that whoever inspired you to make this wins their battle(s). While I lived 2,300 miles away and wasn't there in person, I had to hear and see through phone calls and emailed images my grandmother lose her two-year battle with dementia, and the slow demise from a very strong, cogent woman to what she had become in the months leading up to her passing was extremely similar to how cancer destroys its victims, just in different ways. I do not wish anything like these diseases on any human being, and the scars created in those left behind to grieve their deaths never truly heal.
